What is Placemaking Week?

Placemaking Week is a global gathering of placemakers that emphasizes hands-on learning and innovative social events, while leaving behind a public space legacy in host cities. Embracing a wide variety of sectors and disciplines, the event creates a dynamic forum for attendees to develop and share concrete strategies to advance placemaking both locally and globally. The International Placemaking Week conference has proven to be a vital platform to build connections and share ideas across borders, to provoke local debate and action on public space, and to experience the host city’s places, issues, and initiatives firsthand.

The conference takes place over four to five days and consists of a keynote presentation, plenaries, breakout sessions, on-site and off-site workshops, networking receptions, tours and even day trips.

When and where is the next Placemaking Week?

We are currently accepting applications from cities to host the next Placemaking Week in 2024. You can review the application details here, and find out more information on how to submit your letter of interest. The deadline to submit a Letter of Interest is March 31, 2023.

Where can I learn about conference updates?

We will continue to update www.placemakingweek.org (including this FAQ page) with all conference updates. Make sure to sign up for our Placemaking Week newsletter to receive up-to-date information on registration, program content, speakers, hotels and travel, events and other news.

What opportunities will there be to speak at the conference? Will there be a Call for Proposals?

Once we begin conference planning, we open a call for proposals to lead sessions at the event. We expect this application to open in late 2023.

How can I learn more about the conference?

We recommend that you review our previous conference reports to understand more about Placemaking Week’s programming, activities and impact. You can review the report for 2019’s event in Chattanooga, Tennessee here, and the report for 2017 held in Amsterdam, Netherlands here.

How can I sponsor the event?

Your support for Placemaking Week gives directly back to our host city and its communities by providing scholarships for individuals who might not otherwise be able to attend the event, and a range of networking experiences for our attendees who travel from far and wide to collaborate and share knowledge with their peers. We will launch a 2024 Sponsorship Package later in 2023, but feel free to reach out to us in advance to learn more about how you can contribute to our next event: info@placemakingweek.org.

How can I connect with other placemaking experts in the field between events, or learn about other placemaking events in my region?

To participate in the placemaking movement and learn more about other regional placemaking events, please visit our partners at PlacemakingX, a global network of leaders who together accelerate placemaking as a way to create healthy, inclusive, and beloved communities. This network grew out of earlier efforts by Project for Public Spaces and our partners to convene placemaking leaders around the world.
